I got a call from my brother last Wednesday wanting to see if I wanted to run up to the Mammoth area and fish Hot creek on Saturday. I found out later that my nephew who just graduated last week was going up with some of his friends, and I think my brother just wanted to check up on them. Anyway I dont care why he wanted to go because any reason to head up is a good reason for me. I was not going to go up to that area for a few more weeks, so even if it was going to be a quick trip Kyle and I were in. (Kyle being my 10 year old son)
We left Friday about 1:00 and arived to Mammoth about 5:30. We did not think we would get out of town in time to fish Friday, but with a couple hours of sun light left we headed to the Upper O. There was a great caddis hatch and fish were rising everywhere. I can not remember loosing so many fish in my life, but we were able to bring a few to hand. It was a beautiful evening so I took a few pics.
The next morning we got up, and met my brother in law who lives in mammoth at the Trout Fly, ate some breakfast and headed for Hot Creek. When I informed my son we were going to Hot Creek for the day, he was not very happy. As you all know it can be very difficult to fish with the wind and all the other hot creek factors. It ended up being a perfect day no wind, and after a few hours all the crouds cleared out. It was pretty funny when we first got there we headed down and within 5 minutes all 3 of us had 2 to hand right in front of a guide and his client. My brother in law knows the guide and told me the guide said to quit making him look bad as the client was really struggling.
The day just got better and better when my son landed his first Hot Creek fish. A nice brown ( sorry for the bad pics but my battery ran out, and all we had was my brother inlaws phone. Not a very good one I guess)
He ended up catching a nicer one about 15 minutes later. About 18 - 19 inches, but we did not recieve the pic yet. I ended up landing a number of fish during the day. Lots of nice fat browns and a few rainbows that were toads.
I dont think the pic does this fish justice. It was big as you can see the net above. Before I get flamed for the fish being on the ground, we were barely able to get it in the net. When I got the fly out it slid out of the net and onto the ground so we shot a quick pic and released
It was a great day, and I am so proud of my son. Its always great to be out with him, but its really great when he does what he did. I dont think he realizes what a big deal it was. I try to tell him how people fish a long time before they land fish like he did. Any way hope you like my report.
