Kids Academy 2012 Thank You & Update!

Hi Everyone,
Wow!
Thank you to everyone who made this special weekend! Fifteen club members gave up a day of fishing to share their passion with 17 students. We can't say a big enough thank you to everyone for jumping in and doing an amazing job. Most volunteers didn't have family members in the Academy and just wanted to promote the sport to its future!
Can't forget to mention the parents and grandparents who helped cook and helped in many other ways.
Thank you to the CA DFG for allowing us to use their Kernville hatchery grounds. We had shade trees, picnic tables, and BIG fish for the kids to practice C&R with!
Thank you to Amy K. aka Windtalker for organizing the potluck which an easy 60 people attended.
Thank you to the Kern River Fly Fishers Club for donating the delicious deep pit BBQ meat!
Thank you to Sports Chalet for donating 17 fly boxes.
Thank you to all of the SSSF Fly Tiers and Fly Buyers who donated over 400 flies for the fly boxes.
Thank you to Fred and Phil for moving their fly fishing presentation to our campfire site. That was cool!
Thank you to Kern River Vacation Trailers for donating a trailer and setting up camp for us.
Thank you, Poker Player Donors and volunteers from Novembers KA Poker Night Fundraiser. Club members gave freely and Rob H. even auctioned cigars to raise money.
Thank you to the students. They were respectful, hard working, and a joy to teach
One inspiring part of the KA was the returning students who helped teach. Thank You Tyler, Tim, and Grace!
Hopefully I'm not missing anyone!
This club is truly special in many good ways

Let's not forget a very big special thanks to Shane, aka FishingXJ, who makes sure this event happens well from start to finish. I am sure untold hours are spent.
Special thanks to Shane!!

Brad is right, a big thank you must go to Shane. There is so much to get done to make this happen and Shane makes it look easy and an event like this is anything but easy. Great job Shane, we seem to learn from every year and next year will be even better!!!! It was a pleasure to serve with so many good, high character people. I was very impressed with the kids this year. They all were so cooperative and eager to learn to fly fish. I think this may have been the best class. Anyway, many thanks to Shane and the rest of the KA staff for a job very well done!!! Later, Raider

Boy, what an experience! Thanks to all the expert fishing folks who donated their time and knowledge for the kids.
I think what made my weekend, was recognition and thanks from Colton. Colton was the 2nd place winner in the Youth Division of a Casting Contest in the Bakersfield Outdoor Boat & RV Show back in February, that I helped host. He caught sight of me, ran up, and said,
"Hi Amy, remember me?"
I was thrilled that his parents enrolled him in the Kid's Academy. He's one of the several young people hooked for a lifetime of great fly fishing and stewardship skills by this experience.
The second experience that gave me a thrill was meeting Wildman, a legend on the Forum. He, Mark, and Eric camped right next to me and Spirit! What fun times I had listening to a few of his amazing adventures. Nice folks

Gotta throw the shout out to Shayne too! However, Everyone was amazing. At one point my daughter turned to me and said I didn't have to go with her to every station. I laughed as I explained that I was learning too at each station.
Daughter attended and enjoyed every facet of the event. She was in shock over all of the flies . . . and the rod/reel combo. If you doubt your impact . . . she's dying to start tying flies for me AND . . . on the way home she turns to me and say's lets go fishing next weekend!

To Shane and all the others who made this event an obvious success, thanks. Both mine and Michelle's sights were set on being to this special event, but truck problems put all that to a sudden halt. All the gear was packed, firewood in a pile, etc, etc, but the mechanic called to say it would not be ready until Monday at the latest. We're just so glad that there was a great turn-out. Two thumbs up!

WooooHoooo, was that a blast or what.
Kudos to all that were involved, what a great event.
It was great to see all the club members step up and get involved. To see some of the best casters, tyers and just plain fisherman in our sport, take time to "Cast It Forward", was truly amazing. Thank you for allowing me to play a small part in this great event. I felt right at home with the kids, there was some serious "LAUGHING and ENJOYING" going on.
When you go to these events you always try and set a good example for the kids, in the end it is the kids that are the example. Plain and simple, they were there to have FUN.
It was great to spend time with the kids and have them put things back into perspective. Sometimes we loose track of what this is all about.
Another big thanks to Shane and all the club members who helped with my grandson, Marcos. He was stoked at the end of the day. The drive back to the hotel was only 5 minutes, in that short time he must have said, " That was amazing" at least 5 times.
I awoke the next morning to find Marcos sitting outside on the patio, eating breakfast with his fly rod on the table and his new box of flies open in front of him.
An addict is born......
Thanks to all who participated, and please sign me up for next year.
Laugh and Enjoy,
Randy
Oh, and how cool was that to have Freddie and Phil do their presentaion outside. Nicely done guys, thanks.

Congratulations and THANK YOU to everyone involved!!!
It is posts like this that make me proud to be a Southern Sierra Fly Fishing Club member. My niece Savannah was a grad from the first Kids Academy and still has memories that she occasionally mentions, from the big fish she hooked to the funny stories that Wiredog told.
THANK YOU SHANE!!!
Your devotion to our next generation of not only fly fishers, but community contributors, is not overlooked.
Peace, Rob

Shane,
You did a great job of putting the academy together. I had a great time teaching the students to tie flies. It was great seeing everyone again and meeting new people.
Thanks again.

Shane,
Tons of fun. Well worth the effort... it was good to see everyone again. Had a blast with the kids. What a smart bunch!
I know Tim had a blast teaching the other kids... that's the golden ticket as you pointed out. We definately did a lot of L&E as Randy says... from the time we left LA till the time we returned home at 2:30 this morning.
See ya on the water,
Cris

Thanks to everyone who made this event happen. As you can tell you guys have made Tyler hooked on fly fishing. Ty kept saying he had a great time helping the other kids and can't wait until next year plus the rendezvous.
Thanks again to all the club members who took the time for our kids
