Kern River - Friday 6/1
Jun 1st, 2012, 9:06pm

I was on the river (Fairview Campground area) this afternoon from 1:30PM to 3PM. It was hot (99 degF in Kernville) and I found the water to be running low, clear and warmer (68.5 degF) that I thought it would be. Spooked a few fish, just about stepped on a few suckers, had some rafters float by and ended up catching 3 trout (2 on the nymph dropper and 1 on the dry fly). My time on the river was limited by our travel plans - I had to be back in Bakersfield by 5PM to pick Robin up and continue our trip from Poway up to the Fresno area. Even though I could only fish the heat of the day, I was glad to find a few willing fish. It was fun being back on the Kern

Richard,
68 degree water temp this early in the season cannot be good for the long term health of the fishery.  Sad  I guess it comes with the peak run-off happening in mid-April. I was on the Kern 2 weeks ago and the water temp in the afternoon was a little over 60 degrees. Wet wading was the way to go.

Good job, Richard.  Whenever I have such limited time on the water, I tend to let the pressure get to me.  I tend to catch less, sometimes get skunked, because I just gotta catch something right now before I have to go.

I'll have to take a page from your book and just enjoy the brief time out on the water.  Relax, and let it happen...  Smiley

Nice Richard. That second one is a beaut. An hour and a half well spent. Just enough to charge the batteries.

Gary.
