handle and seat
May 31st, 2012, 5:56am

I screwed up and didnt think about having to drill the handle when I got this seat. Saw something like this in another board and was wondering what people thought before appling the final coat of epoxie. Should I just get a different seat Kids thought it looked good but they are probably trying to make dad happy (one needed her car worked on )

Nice job on the handle!  If you had access to a lathe you could cut off the part that would look better hidden by cork.  I would second your thoughts, not the kids.

That is a good looking handle. I don't see a screw up, it looks like a design challenge to me. Here are a few thoughts that went through my mind. First off is the handle glued to the blank? If not a Dremel tool would route out the opening if you are careful, I've done it by hand using a flat wood bit turned by hand after I reamed the handle and my usual method for drilling the inlet would not work. Wrap the end of the handle with tape before you do anything.

Some other ideas...paint the end the color of the rod and wrap it to match your guides, turn a smaller checkerboard cover for the end, maybe tapper it, how about a feather inlay or have Pete turn you a nice aluminum stepped down cover and matching winding check.

Have fun with it.

I used that exact reel seat on on a nymphing rod I built for myself and I recessed it into the cork. You may need to replace the bottom ring on your handle with one that leaves you just a bit more room.

Alternately, you can add one more piece of cork with an insert for the reel seat.  Check for a dark or light color that goes with the rest of the grip.  Shape the cork slightly before you glue it together and give it a final shaping when the glue sets.

Am ordering cork with larger holes in them to fit the seat. Only problem is they dont have them in burnt cork and I dont have a way to drill it. Have tryed forstner bite and a few others and worry about using a drimmel and ruining it. Have been making the cork industry rich tearing up cork already. All I have are hand tools and no safe way of holding them need my fingers. Ill just continue on untill I come up with a way or new seat or something.

The only handle I have found for those seats that have the recess in them are

Let's make it simple.  Send me the diameter the cork needs to be cut to, and I will turn them in the lathe and send then to you.  Also send me your address in a PM.  The lathe will available on Monday.  It makes the work easy.

Let me know if you think that other than dark cork will look ok with the rest of the grip.  I can get the dark cork, but it will be in a day or two. The three samples are what was available at the closest fly shop.

For comparison, I have shown a 1/4 inch wide dark cork  (I have no dark cork in 1/2 inch wide).  The other three options get progressively lighter.

The design decision is yours!  I think this post is the easiest way to show you the color options.

For those interested in how the center is cut out of the cork with a lathe, here’s a couple photos to show the operation.

Cork ring is held by three jaw chuck in place and ready to be bored.

The actual cutting operation.

This operation is similar to cutting a marshmallow.  The boring works very well for hard materials, but this is not the greatest, but it works.  Under the current circumstances, that seems acceptable to me.

If you don't have a lathe you can use a forstner bit a little smaller than you want your hole to be, then finish it to size with a dremel tool.
