I realized that I hadn't reported my trip to the Sierras so I figure I'd put it up, at least its something to look at when you're dreaming about fishing.
My brother had been seeing alot of huge fish being reported in the UO river in the Western Outdoor News, particularly with a specific guide, 'Two Bug Doug' so he tracked Doug down and worked out a great deal to show us around the river for the day.
I in the past have had guides, but my brother hadn't so he was super excited. The weather the previous weeks was that non-typical warm weather they were experiencing, sunny skies and such with an occasional cold day here and again.
Well, when we got there it wasn't one of those days, it was 13 degrees that day...
By far for me the coldest day I have ever fished... but the weather did warm up a bit to the 30's by the afternoon, and as long as the wind stayed down it was fine other than the constant chipping ice from the eyelets.
Doug right away put us on some fish, nothing large, just a good pan sized trout here and there, and then all of the sudden, WHAM... took my fly hard, right where he said there would be a big one...
Honestly, the biggest trout to date I've landed on a fly rod... boy did it make my day. On the 6wt Sage he had me set up on, I have to admit I didn't feel her as much, and would have loved to play her on a 5wt or my 3wt, but I was ear to ear grin the rest of the day.
The snow from a storm a few weeks previous had almost all melted before we got there.
Doug spent alot of time with my brother in law, and they hooked a huge fish, likely somewhere near the 25-30" range, as it got close I was a few hundred yards up stream and they both were screaming from excitement, but with barbless hooks and a novice at big fish catching, my brother lost it... He always talks about, "the one that got away"
We had a great time, Doug spent alot of time with us, far more than what we originally had "paid for" so we offered to take him to dinner, we bought him a Steak in Bishop and just shot the breeze with him for at least 3-4 hours, talking about all things fly fishing and such, and Doug offered to take us out to PVR, to show us some float tubing tips and tricks, we heartily agreed.
Funny story, they were filming "G.I. Joe" that week, so the hotel over booked my room, so we sat for 3 hours waiting for them to try and fix the mess they were in, until they finally asked us to go to another hotel - I did get a free night stay though, and free continental breakfast the next day. So we stayed in a small motel on Line St... Lol, that's a whole other story.
We met doug at PVR and went to float tube, right away with sinking line and the right rigs we were on the fish.
the rest of the day carried on in that fashion, a fish every 4-5 min, until the wind came up something awful. We put in as we were exhausted from trying to fight the wind, and called it a day.
