Local Mtn Lake on a Tube
Apr 25th, 2012, 5:46pm

There are so many more river reports here than any lake reports.  While the streams of my locals have been a bit big and off color I figured I'd venture off to a small mountain pond that is usually full during summer and take advantage of pre-season solitude on the lake.

Last time I was fishing was early march in the Sierras, so I had been itching to go.

Showed up at the lake and it was busy busy busy... turns out in our local mountains, they were filming for "Grey's Anatomy" and for the stars they were using the parking lot of this lake to set up their trailers, and all day long they were shuttling the actors to the location and so forth.  Anyways, while the parking lot for the lake was packed (closed anyways until mid May to public use) the lake was EMPTY, there were a few spin fishers fishing but they left shortly after I arrived.

I had bought a set of "Force Fins" on eBay for $50 ($140 saved on new) and had been dying to try them out.  Go the tube out and started to fish.

I have to go back to my previous trip in the Sierras in early March.  My brother in law kept seeing 'Two bug Doug' in the Western Outdoor News so he called him up and hired him to take us on the Upper Owens for some big winter fish.  SO MUCH FUN!  After taking Doug to dinner that night to shoot the breeze, we talked him into taking us tubing the next day and showing ups some still water fishing tips.  (I Pride myself on being pretty able to read a river - BUT STINK AT FISHING LAKES)

So, taking what he showed us on the lake, I applied that to this little mountain lake, and whew, what a way to spend the day...  They were hitting like crazy.  In the past I have fished this lake, all the way back to my childhood with my dad and I HAVE NEVER CAUGHT A TROUT AT THIS LAKE, but I broke that family stoop, and had a great day.

I didn't bring a camera because based on my previous experience at the lake I figured I wouldn't need it, it was more a chance to try out my new full sink line and fins, but I had such a good day.  I used my phone to snap a pic of a trout and a small Large Mouth Bass, but I was too afraid to take it out anymore being that I would drop it in the water just because I was thinking about not dropping it in the water.

I lost count after a dozen or so, but all good "Pan Sized" fish, of course all released back and caught with a barbless olive streamer.

And a few of these little guys...

On the way out I saw Patrick Dempsey and Sandra Oh getting ready to film...

I have a feeling this little lake is going to be busy for a few more days now.

Pretty Fish!!! And a bass on a streamer huh... that's awesome.

I have been itching to do some lake tubing. The first time I ever picked up a fly rod I was in a tube w/ sink line and a streamer... Somewhere in Canada I suppose, but I do remember having a baby bear come out to play w/ me. I have enjoyed the limited times I have done it ever since.
