Fish like a Heron

Thanks to Guy, we are reminded to fish like heron every time we read Guy's reports.
I competed with some great blue herons, seven of them.
One of the locals lakes is well stocked with trout. As a man-made lake it has about 15 little coves due to the hilly topography. The size of the cove is about size of the parking lot next to the Kern River Fly Shop. Now add 500 or a 1,000 stockers to the area. It is not deep for that size. Due to a cold front, the air temperature was 35 to 40. Add a little snow and rain to encourage cold fingers.
This wasn't my first time to this cove. At first the temperatures were in the 70's and everything would catch fish. Double-digit fish catches per hour was common.
As the temperature got colder, the trout got selective. Midges seem to be the key, but they became less effective. A foam grasshopper had the trout chase it like they were playing rugby.
Back to the showdown with the herons. I was armed with a new supply of zebra midges. The schools of trout moved with speed. The zebra midges were less effective than a lot of fly action.
The herons outcaught my efforts!
I went home to warm up. Tomorrow is another day.

If you're practicing catch and release, what difference does it make for the size of the fish you land.

Sounds like a great day, both for you and the herons. The advice is really good. Though it's cool and pretty to cast far, we've found a reverse relationship between casting distance and trout catching: The shorter the cast, the more fish we catch. The longer the cast, the fewer.

I agree. I love watching fly fishermen and casters like Guy cast to tomorrow and still hook up with a fish (like in his video series). I do much better and get better drifts when I only have a short piece of line out...under 20 feet. I seem to do better on the creeks then the rivers...perhaps because I am forced to go short. That was a good analogy with Herons.

New and warmer day and a new 'guest' instructor.
An Osprey added some lessons to the fishing sessions.
It turns out the 55-acre lake was stocked with 12-inch fish last week. The herons dropped in number from 7 to 3. The first osprey catch was a pelican sized dive bomb. Wow! The next three catches were classic swoops as the fish rose to the surface and became Osprey dinner. Lots of fun to watch! According to a wildlife photographer, the Osprey has been documented to catch trout up to about 20-inches.
For the stockers, my double digit catches exceeded the Osprey catch yesterday, but I concede the size to the Osprey.
As a comparison of mindsets, Brownbear sees the heron as a short cast specialist. I see the heron as a slow action stealth fisher. Interesting.
My streamer fishing is less subtle, but not as much as the Osprey.
It is all fun!

Some say that fly fishing is as fun as having sex. If that’s true, I’m doing one of them wrong!

The same absence of C & R applies to the osprey, the cormorants, and most of the fisherman who were sharing the lake with me.
Some actions are based on instinct and some are based on personal preferences.

If it makes you feel any better, they have been doing this every day since they were born... haha
