Flying Drift Boat

Two weeks ago, the Antelope Valley was having a nice wind storm. At my house, we were seeing winds steady at 40 mph with gusts about 60 mph or more. About 8:00 am in the morning, we heard a couple of very loud thumps from the back yard. I looked out the window and noticed my 16 ft wooden drift boat was now missing from the back yard. I had it off the off the trailer and was set upside down so I could work on the trailer. I found it about 20 feet outside the the fence line, setting on it's bottom. It had cleared a four foot high fence and broken two fences posts on it's flight of about 30 feet. So far there appears to be no damage to it other than scoffed paint damage. About three hours later, I found it had slid another 20 feet across the desert from the wind. It is now chained down so today's wind and rain storms don't blow it across the desert. So now it's time to rebuild the fence plus repaint the bottom of the boat which had just been painted about 3 months ago. Plus I am now thinking about adding a couple of cement ground tie downs points in the area I will be parking the boat.
How high can your boat fly?

Wow, that is some seriously strong wind. Only thing missing in this story is a kite string and tail. Yeah, I'd definitely find a way to anchor that boat down or you'll just end up with more damage.

Just add ailerons and point it into the wind.
Just joking, it can really blow out there...

By careful deduction, you have a light boat. That's always a good thing.
I can't make any conclusions about your neighborhood.
However, I have always liked boats. When you bring it up to the Kern, please let me know so I can see it firsthand. If you have any inclination to drift the lower Owens, I got a map of put in / take out points from the fly shop in Bishop. If you would like a copy, send me your address in a PM. Glad to send a copy.

If you're practicing catch and release, what difference does it make for the size of the fish you land.

Thanks for the offer of a map of the Owens river, and I would like to get a copy of it. Will send a PM in a couple of weeks, still have a lot of work left to do on the boat, plus heading to AK in a week so still putting stuff together for that trip.

Never sailed a drift boat, but discovered my "stolen" canoe about 25' up a tree and a quarter mile from the house. It now lives tied down to its rack, but I'll let you guess how we got that thing down from the tree. I'm surprised your boat sailed when it had been upside down, but I'm not an aeronautic engineer. I bet it's a non-issue upright on your trailer, but you have tie-downs. Perhaps the message is not to trailer it bottom up. If a 40 mph wind can loft it, imagine what would happen at 60 on the highway!
