tid-bits of fishing
Feb 7th, 2012, 6:14pm

So I have been out and about lately, and have a little info to share.

First,  I took a guided trip learning to spey cast the other day.... wow!  Was that fun!  Spey casting increases the time your fly is in the water times 3, and increases the water you cover times 3.  What a fun way to fish.

I did my trip with Bill Lowe, who is a great spey instructor.... I did my best to get him to come down!

Also, I am the proud owner of a 7'10 6wt reddington predator... this thing is a line cannon.  loaded up with a outboun short, or ambush line around 240 to 260 grains, it eats up casts for lunch... I think Guy carries them in his shop... if you get a chance to cast one... do so!  Again, fun rod to toss.

Welcome to the Spey Club!!! Smiley  I got hooked on it about 3 years ago after taking lessons from Bill Lowe myself.  He's a great guy and a heck of an instructor.  You hit the nail right on the head...you can easily bomb out 80 foot casts and cover tons of water while not even making a backcast.  I've gotten my father hooked on it now which increases his ease and enjoyment of flyfishing as he's getting older.

Dittos on the long rod.  My eleven year old daughter only wants to fish with my 11 ft Sage Switch.  She says that it just so much easier to move the line around Cool

A lesson with Bill Lowe or Craig Nielsen is on my wish list.

May not be a Spey, but I am just about done building a 11' St. Croix Switch for myself.  Looking forward to learning how to sling line with it, especially in the salt.

Less stress on your shoulder than overhead casting?  Please say yes.

Pete, I use 10 and 11' for steel regularly with single hand Spey casts, I've also fished some 11'6 switches. Taking the 11' and 11'6  to the salt I was skeptical, but found some advantage with adjustment. Unlike swinging  or nymphing for steel, your line hand becomes very important on the retrieve, leaving the long rod to contend with. Tucking the rod and retrieving with two hands is a must for shoulder relief. Double hauling switch rods in a normal single hand technique gains nothing except dealing with a heavier rod, thus more stress. . However, if you use a roll with  two hands to get the head out of the guides,  use the water to load while pinching the line to cork with your upper hand, single  backcast then shoot,releasing the line from under your finger,  it takes very little effort to get the line back out. Having spent alot of time in the surf with  9' single handers, the jury is still out for me. If you're firing over high surf or have high dunes or rocks behind, an advantage is gained. If you can get comftorable with the rod pinched beneath your elbow for stripping line on the retrieve, I think some shoulder strain can be relieved.  It's also a gain to have the longer butt for fighting fish. Alot of the strain is taken off the arm and shoulder that way.  Just my thoughts, hope they help in some  small way.

Bill is a great spey casting instructor. He explains it in a way that makes you get it. After making some of the longest bomber cast Ive ever made I was hooked. I have a red truck 7wt 13'6 on the way with all the fixins. Also hooking into a big ol steelie is  incredible even if he does not decide to stick around!

Cool, if this does happen, all I can say is that you really don't want to miss this one. Bill is an amazing spey caster and great teacher. You don't want to miss this chance for some one on one instruction from one of the true Spey gurus. With that being said..... let me be the first to say;
