First Time Floating SD Bay 10/19~20
Oct 24th, 2011, 11:16am

First, I must thank Rich Cullip and Mark Sweat for all their input and guidance. With their help I felt like I knew what I was doing. I used Rich’s two fly setup with his famous root beer and orange clouser for the bottom fly and my chartreuse and orange clouser for the top fly. During the two days I never changed flies, except for the bottom one when something large broke me off, but I put another root beer and orange back on. It was about even for which fly they liked best, so why change.

I got there before sunrise each morning, just as my mentors suggested. The sky was overcast both days, I never saw the sun. Maybe this was why the fishing was good. I caught about two dozen the first day and double that the second day. Most all were bass with about a dozen doubles.

I did catch one other type of fish mackerel? Baby tuna? Maybe you can ID it.

It was a very neat experience watching the large naval ships moving about. The other interesting thing was to watch the vehicle move the center divider on the bridge above. Three lanes inbound and two outbound in the morning and reverse that afternoon. I can’t wait to go back once the tube rash on the outside of my knees heals.

Nice work, Virgil!  Smiley I was down there Saturday morning introducing a friend to that sweet fishery! He had a blast and now has the bug, I think. Wink those Spotties are a lot of fun, for sure, especially when those doubles.  Looks like you had a good time! Thanks for the report.

All the Best, Dave

Looks like a very productive 2 two days of fun.

Don't know what that critter might be. Just don't let it crawl down your ear canal (like in the old Star Trek movie The Wrath of Khan)  Wink Wink Wink

Virgil,

It was great to see the doubles. I never used to get them until Richard showed me how to rig.

It never fails to amaze me that those relatively small Baby Bass can cause such a jolt when they hit that heavy sinking line.

I find it interesting how hydrodynamically efficient those naval warships are. When they move through the bay, there is very little wake.
