Caught a smelt this weekend on Shane's Soft Hackle Streamer. First couple casts had short strikes, then got the smelt, a couple more short strikes and a cuda decides to snag the lead fly with the soft hackle in tow. cry

Sorry about the pic quality.

Peace, Rob

Hey they're good for something!  Gartside ties them with a longer shank hook. Now we know why!  The modern versions use circle hooks undecided

Shane, I fished alongside Jack Gartside a number of times, as we had a number of favorite stretches of estuary and beach north of Boston in common.  He was very good at creating flies with movement. He has a salty fly he  called  the Beastmaster which was like an overgrown softhackle. I have caught tons of fish on his Gurgler. I never tried his softies, as I've tried and liked other patterns and never got around to them. I was glad to see you tied those for the swap and can't wait to try them. They'll  hopefully work on steelhead. I have no doubt I'll get  takes; it's whether the hooks will hold up. Thanks for a wonderful pattern and keeping Jack's legacy going. He was a cool dude.

Received my flies today and I must comment:

In the past 30 years I've participated in well over two hundred fly swaps, the quality and variety of flies offered in this swap was right at the top.

Thanks so much to all the participants and to Ryan for hosting!

I agree Bill,I've been doing these swaps for awhile now(not 30 years worth yet Smiley) and this one was a very good one. Some of the tyers have been at it for only a short time but are producing some nice flies. Thanks to everyone for a good swap.

Greetings fellow swappers:
Last week I decided to try something a little different.
Packed in to a small lake west of Carson City and from a float tube utilized a fly from every participant in the soft hackle/wet fly swap.
The pictures are of the first fish caught on each tiers fly.

Purple Spider - Adam (Petundra)

Peacock Partridge Pupa - Mark (Sweatboy)

Partridge and Orange - Rob (Western Coachman)  This fly and Rob's Carey Special was part of a double hook-up.

Carey Special - Rob (clouserfreak)  That's right, the two Rob's were the double.

Black Gnat Wet - Ryan (ryan)

Partridge and Peacock - Charlie (Bluefish)

Gartside Streamer - Shane (FishnXJ)

Tangerine Dream - Alan (HighFlyer)

Soft Hackle Hares Ear - Derek (D-Will)  This fly produced the only Tiger Trout of the trip.

Always wanted to try and catch a fish from every fly of a swap.
And thanks to some fine tiers on this forum, another small item was scratched from my 'Bucket List'.

Cyberfish...see you guys at the Vous

Rats, my fly caught the smallest fish! Wink

I gotta say that's a really cool way to end the swap, fishing all the flies...

Very cool!!!! I've recently noticed how many great swap flies that I have and intend to make a couple of boxes and fish those exclusively for a weekend.

Not surprised to see Derek's fly catch the only Tiger. He is improving very quickly and tied some nice flies for this swap.
