Copperdropper's Bamboo build
Jan 28th, 2011, 12:58pm

Ok..... remember way back to last year.  We took donations (equipment & $$$$) for "Project Healing Waters".  One of the incentives was if you donated $50 or more you were put in for a shot at a Bamboo blank.  Well Gary won the blank and I can't think of a more deserving guy.  Anyway Gary opted to pay for the components and have me finish the rod. Well here it is:

Gary went with a 7'6", 3 piece, 3-4 weight, blonde rod.
Guide wraps: Lime green silk, no CP.
Trim wraps: 2 turn Evergreen silk, no CP
Seat: Nickle silver, wedding band with Maple burl (Custom by Doug Daniel)
Handle: Cigar shaped Flor grade cork
Winding check: Nickle silver hexagon
Stripping guide: Moss Agate.

Gary and I have both lawn cast it and it feels good and shoots a nice bit of line without much effort, with a light touch.

NEW RULE:  From now on anybody who has me build a rod has to take pictures, both static and action shots.  I can't have crummy looking pictures on my web site, so now you guys are responsible for the picture qualiy.

Thanks for looking,
Pete

P.S. No Keith I haven't forgotten you.  Your rod has the first three coats on it  Wink.  Keith won the Bamboo blank and components that Chiaki donated for the 2010 Rendezvous.

Pete -

It's almost as exciting to see the photos as it is to see & handle the rod in person.  Smiley  Truly a work of art that will be a very special addition to my arsenal. I can already feel the tug pulling me to the "Boo" side.

I can't wait to get out and fish it.  As for the photos, I'll do the best I can!  Wink

Thanks,

Gary

That's such a great color combo.  Another masterpiece!

One cool thing about Pete's builds,  they fish better than they look Cool

You're a lucky guy Gary.  Has your better half ordered one yet?  Valentines day is right around the corner Wink

Pete,

I am really looking forward to the rod. The only time I have fished with a boo rod was 40 years ago when my grandfather loaned me his boo for a day. Thanks to Chiaki for his donation and you for your labor for finishing the rod. How about posting a picture of the rod even though it is not yet completed? I am really looking forward to seeing it.

Nice work, Pete!! I haven't been able to even get on the forum for awhile... don't ever lose your password, there's no gettin it back, they only send you new ones that are impossible to remember and you can't change it back to your original that I can find... sheesh!
Anyway, GREAT job and I'm sure there'll be tons of nice fish caught with it.
I should get a few pics of my latest one on here, too. A 3wt. with bamboo ferrule. I've been trying to trim down the size of the ferrule walls to make it more streamlined and it came out nice.
Hope to see you all on the water someday soon.

Well, Gary stopped by yesterday and picked her up.  Like watching your kid leave for college.  You hate to see em go  cry, but you know its for the best  Smiley.  Now onward and upward to finishing the other builds I have hanging over my head  Wink.

Gary brought a reel loaded with a double taper, Sage I think.  It was a nice compliment to the rod.  Since I haven't cast a DT line in about 25 years it took a bit of work, but I think I am sold.  Now I need to try out some Cortland Sylk on a bamboo build.  No Mike.... I don't think I am ready to step up to straight silk just yet  undecided.

First, I wanna thank Jon for helping me get my dang PASSWORD BACK!!! YAY!!!  Grin
Never go deep enough into forums and stuff to figure all that out... Thanks buddy!

Pete,
The real silk is sweet, but Cortland's sylk is not a bad substitute and a heckuva lot cheaper! Heck, it's even cheaper than most standard lines nowadays...
Yeah, you always miss em... but you know they go to good homes.

later,
Mike

I've been to Pete's a couple of times and this guy has a passion for rods, especially bamboo. Pete has cut my learning curve by a lot. I had the privilage of seeing some of what it takes to build a bamboo rod and, it is amazing the effort and knowledge that goes into one of these things. I am a cutting edge graphite rod guy, however if I ever wanted to fish a bamboo rod I would have Pete build it. Thanks Pete, my first selfmade handle came out awesome, I wouldn't change one thing about it. By the time I finish these two sage's I hope I'll know how to post pictures.
