Extended Body Mayfly Swap
Nov 21st, 2010, 7:42am

Now that the flows have settled down, it's a great time to present those BWO's .  The extended body mayfly patterns are one of my favorites as a dry fly and there is more than one way to make that extended body. So I propose an Extended Body Mayfly Swap. Swap is open to all levels. You can tie any mayfly from a Hex size 8 to a Baetis size 20. Due to the holidays coming, let's have a deadline of Jan 15th. We will limit the group to Eleven members, therefore, eleven flies each. I'll PM each member with addy.

Eleven available spots:
1. Wildman
2. Dances with Bears
3. Crash Ash
4. Clouserfreak
S. StevenOjai
6. Phelps Bros.
7. Pete
8. Coachscott
9. Ryan
10. Flyn Ryan
11. Cyberfish          Swap is FULL!!

This intrigues me as I have never tied an extended body.  I am in with something I think I can tie after some research.

About ten years ago, I submitted this BWO to Fly Tyer's World. The body is a porcupine quill wrapped in the sheath of an Olive dyed saddle hackle that is peeled from the quill. The shealth is wrapped around the porcupine quill and held by super glue. Microfibbets protrude from the center. It's a whole lot of trouble without much gain. The trout would hit the fly and the stiffness would create a bunch of no-takes. It was like eating a marachino cherry without removing the toothpick once you plucked it from your drink.

What convinced me to stay the course is that trout do prefer a more realistic silouette when presented a dry fly on a calm surface of water. Fortunately, there are a bunch of ways to tie extended bodies that are a lot easier than my first attempt. Hope all of you commit to the swap, I'm sure  there will be a number of techniques shown to represent extended bodies. This could be fun!

It appears the swap is full.  Should someone withdraw I would like to be considered as a replacement.

Bill,
I could never leave you out...consider yourself in and we'll fill the swap with Eleven. Eleven swappers and eleven flies. I expect all will be happy with that. So, let's consider the swap FULL!
Regards, Steve

Not sure what was being smoked yesterday Huh, but I will definitely make it a mayfly now.

Tried a couple of ideas last night, will post pics for feedback after more tinkering.

Peace, Rob
