San(d) Joaquin(g) Outing

I didn’t get the ‘sand walking’ title line when this outing was first announced. Or at least not as it was intended. I remembered that a few years back, after a fire had burned through this area, that the walk in to the canyon, with all it’s decomposed granite (sand) and blackened landscape, was a bit of a death march… Thought that was what Chris was referring to when he announced that we were going to be doing some ‘sand walking’.
Dad figured out immediately though that San(d) Joaquin(g) was the play on words Chris had in mind. We later confirmed on Saturday night sitting around the campfire, and I pointed out to Chris (who hadn’t been here yet) that the trail was in fact really sandy.
Had a good time around the fire Saturday night with Chris playing a mini concert for us. Chris is an excellent guitar player and flyfisher. I envy him on both counts.
Chris did well on a rubber legged prince nymph and seemed to be hooking up pretty regularly. He offered the ‘right fly’ but I was still hung up on getting them on my own ties. Ended up keeping the skunk off for the AM session with this trophy.
Sunday, we broke camp and hit Starkweather lake on our way out of the park. Kind of an ironic name considering we were prevented from going on it the night before by a pretty persistent and active electrical storm that seemed to just hover over the lake. Here’s Cris cruising some structure.
I, once again avoided the white stripe with this lone bruiser taken on a submerged damsel fly nymph.
The fishing was kind of slow on the lake, so we opted to head for the Upper Owens where Dad and I have always done fairly well. On the way out, I took some wild flower photos and a few cuttings for my native garden. (Cris: It’s looking good that I’ll be able to get you some Monkeyflower and Penstemon plants for the new place – The cuttings made it back in great shape and are already in the dirt).
Sierra Lily
Newberry’s Penstemon (Mountain Pride)
Monk’s Hood
Lewis’ Monkey flower
We got out of Post Pile just in time for some serious weather to start coming down. Drove through BIG rain drops and lots of lightning on our way to the water, we were kept from wetting a line on the Upper O when the lightning just wouldn't let up. . Took a video hoping to catch one of the bolts coming down. Dad thinks I got one. I’m not so sure, but you get a pretty good idea for the amount of rain that was heading our way. Also kind of funny to get Dad’s take on blonde’s!!
All in all a successful outing. Had a great time, and cant wait to get back up there.
Thanks Cris for putting it all together!
Brandt
PS. Sorry for the size and orientation of the photos. Photobucket isnt letting me resize or rotate them.

Brandt,
That's okay, I didn't get it, until you just pointed it out.
Man I'm slow. Looks like another great trip and nice pics.

If fly fishermen cannot have the best, we will take the least, and fish for minnows if nothing better is to be had.

It was a really awesome trip... things just clicked. I rolled in Friday night and those guys had a fire going, and a scotch ready to be poured. They even had a proper chair for me. I bring my simple backpacking tripod stool… I happened to have a bunch of fire wood left over from the Monache outing and they were about out so it was on. It was nice to see Brandt and Dave again… last time we were on the O, I knew we had a cool camping trip in store in the future. I met Brandt’s fishing buddy Scott and his dad and it was nice to see the fathers and sons out and about. They spoiled me and made coffee and breakfast and a delicious dinner of pork tenderloin and pasta. Scott and his pops had to return home Saturday morning, so I spent the day leapfrogging the river with Brandt and Dave. I’ve been in this groove of fishing a single bead head nymph with no indicator. I went out Saturday morning without my rainjacket… and the seemingly inevitable dramatic afternoon rainshowers came so I hunkered up to a tree, got out my cliff bar and a beer I had stashed in my waders for just such an occasion. I stood against the tree for about an hour as the rain fell, sipping my beer and enjoying the fresh air. The thunder is humbling and seems to be just overhead. When the rain stopped I made my way back to camp and we all went to the postpile. I was flabberghasted at the beauty of that area. Brandt and I were side by side and both were landing fish… he discovered that they were taking caddis and I switched. We fished this bend of a river and both pulled out a couple nice wild fish on dries … It was a really beautiful evening. I fished the river next to camp a little more just before dark and when I returned Brandt hollered out ‘ hey cris, do me a favor … in the cooler there is a big bottle of 30th anniversary Sierra Nevada with a cork on top… that’s yours, will you grab that?’ sure Brandt, no problem. Man it was delicious and I really appreciated the gesture. By the time we had eaten, it was definitely time for some guitar playing… after a day like that, I was in a nice place to play some acoustic and Brandt and Dave were all to deserving. Thanks for everything you guys, I really enjoy spending time with you and am really pleased at the weekend. Until next time.
Cris
Ps we forgot to mention the group that was in the groupcamp next to us. It was about 30 french girls who didn’t speak a lick of english. Enjoy.

One can never enter the same river twice. The river is always new and the man is forever changed.

Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he'll buy a funny hat. Talk to a hungry man about fish, and you're a consultant.

So exactly where were we on this outing? You'll never know! Guess it is more important to leave this area to the unwashed masses... part of "Obama Care" (I think
)! I will say a few more fishers of the fly wouldn't hurt the place... showing the bait chuckers how it is done... kinda' like our trip years ago to the "Royal River."
Here are TroutThumb (Cris) and Sasquatch (Brandt) on the river.
And here are Cris & Brandt checking out the lake named after the famous red headed mass murderer of the 1960's (first name was Charlie):
Saw a lot of deer, but no "beers" (as the French kids called the bears). As we were packing up Sunday morning, observed this nice buck using the rock next to our camp as a salt lick:
Sasquatch had a good time taking photos of flowering plants up on "Big Hairy Elephant Mountain."
Final note on camping... be sure to "drown, stir, and feel" your campfire! Smokey needs everybody's help!
Thanks to Cris for a memorable couple of days!
Dave.

Very nice trip guys all around. Jake and I were up above you guys in the "Horse Luggage" Region. It was an "electrical weekend" wasn't it? We got nailed Sat with rain and hail.
Cris, I'm with you on the simplicity of high sticking just a single nymph, less wind knots, trouble. Quicker hook-sets.
Again great outing.
