Rod Building Class.  Interested?
May 20th, 2010, 6:23pm

I have been approached by a couple of people about a time frame for the next rod building class.  This is a great opportunity to build your own custom rod.  SSFFC members get a fantastic deal on the equipment and complete rod kit.

Its a one day class where you will learn the basics of rod building.  When you leave the rod handle and seat should be installed and the majority of guides, if not all should on.  You will have to apply the finish at home.  But that process will be ccovered in class.

We can take 8 students.  Any interest?

I don't want to quote the wrong pice on the class, so I will check with Chiaki as to pass prices.  Usually the rod for class is a 9', 5 wt., 3 piece.  We can get the complete kits for a very reasonable price.  The class includes everything necessary to build a rod.  From the wrapping station, drying motor, tools thread, finish, you name it it came with the class.

Really good value.  You would pay a lot more if the class wasn't through the SSFFC.

I took it.  This class is well worth the effort.  You will come away with the knowledge and ability to make your own fly (or any fishing) rod.  The kits are complete....the instructors are outstanding (and very supportive) and the class is a lot of fun.  You come away with a rod you made yourself and can catch fish on right away.  This one is something you won't want to miss and is the next step in your fly fishing journey.

The approx. cost of the class should be around $125.  Included in the price is a 9ft 5 wt. Pac Bay rod building kit: blank, reel seat, cork handle, guides, thread, wind check, glue stick, epoxy & finish.  You will also receive a wrapping station, drying motor, scissors, emery cloth, thread burnishing tool & white china marker.  Supplies for your use in class include: cork reamer, masking tape, dry wall tape & epoxy.  The most important item included in the class is Pete’s excellent rod building instruction, which is priceless.  The low cost is attributable to partial funding by the SSFFC and great deals provided by our vendors.  I doubt if you can find a rod building class at this low rate.

Thanks,
Chiaki

125$ is an unbeatable price to walk away with the tools and the rod.  What an awesome discount!

Sounds like a great opportunity.

Thanks for the compliment Chiaki, but if I remember correctly I took the class from you  Wink.  You are too humble.  There are a lot of good rod builders in the club because of you.

And yes folks, it is an exceptional deal at $125 to club members.  Another great reason to join the club at an unbeatable membership price.

Pete, I would like to attend the class also. I first need to make it up to Guy's shop to drop off the waders and pay my dues to the club. I'm going to see if I can take care of that in the next couple of weekends. I'm looking forward to this class because you did an outstanding job on the fly tieing class I attended. I have never made my own rod so I will be glued to your every word  Smiley

Pete,

When do you think you are going to have the class? What about a bamboo rod building class?

I plan on setting the class up as soon as I get enough interest.  We can't lay out the money until we get the money.  I have at least or 5 poeple interested.  Once I get 8 I'll set it up.

Bamboo class?  Whew, you are talking about a week long class.  Plus the investment in tools and materials would be several hundred dollars.  The guys that give classes where you build your own rod cost upwards of $1200 to $1800 and you don't keep the tools.  Plus you have to pay for lodging and meals.
