Project Healing Waters
May 11th, 2010, 7:37am

Ok, who needs an excuse to build another rod  Wink?  Gary (CopperDropper) figured it was time to do another drive for a worthy cause. The club (SSFFC) is starting a donation drive for "Project Healing Waters".  You can read all about them at http://www.projecthealingwaters.org/index.html and in the May SSFFC newsletter.  In a nut shell they take disabled veterans fly fishing.  It includes completely outfitting them for the adventure.

I am posting this in the rod building section, since they can use some rods.  Carol Katz, Southwest Regional Coordinator said they could use some 3 or 4 weight rods in whatever length we wanted to do.  She mentioned taking vets fishing on the San Gabriel

The deadline for getting the rods to us is: July 4th.  Nothing says you have to build a Sage with the high dollar components.  Go with what feels good.

Gary will be posting more information on the "Project Healing Waters" donations in other sections of the forum.  This is a great cause and these disabled vets are worth much more than we can ever do for them.  It would be nice to send them several rods for their local fishing trips.  More information to come.

That sounds great Pete. I'll keep an eye out for the posts. I still have my Hodgemans waders that are in great shape. I think they just found a new home.

Let me see what I can do about the rod build.

What length? How many sections?
Who can I send the rod too once it is done?

Carol said that the rod length is up to the builder.   Figure a 3 or 4 weight in a length that will work for something the size of the San Gabriel.  Of course I have no idea about the size of the San Gabriel (hint, hint, somebody chime in on the San Gabriel).  Personally I am thinking about one of the Forecast IM6 4 piece blanks from Acid Rods.  The IM6 is a lower modulus and will probably be more forgiving (less breakage) for a new fly fisherman.

If they get enough rods Carol may do a free raffle, for a shot at a rod, among the participants.  I knew you would come thru you always do  Wink.  The finished rods can be sent to me.  Gary and I will put everything together and ship it off after July 4th.

Have you talked to Mark about this? Maybe he can give a discount. Just asking.

A 3 weight or smaller is a good size for the San Gabriel area. Bushie small creek in some spots, wide open in others. Fish are on the small size. The creek is on average only 20 feet wide on the widest areas but some larger pools in other areas. A 5 weight is really overkill there. I use a 3 weight 7'-6" TFO rod there. I would compare it to Piru creek but a little wider and more flow. Maybe 1/3 the size of the Kern.

Hope this helps.
