Great photo! Looks as if you guys are on the Trinity on the "Austen" run. What a rush...I remember the first steelhead I ever hooked into. I was so excited that I got my feet all twisted in the line and had the fish break off!

There are two types of fly fishermen: Those who make it a lifestyle and those who wish they could.

Looks like I better get something up.
We arrived to our destination around 3pm on Wed. Dropped our stuff off at our riverside cabin, and hit the water. With in 20 minutes... I had the thrill of my fishing life. I got absolutly smoked by a huge steely. He grabbed my bugs, and ran so hard that it totally destroyed the drag on my reel...my reel was burning so fast I couldnt see the knob... just a blur. Well once the drag got destroyed, I tried to palm it and be broke off... only about 10 seconds, but it was one heck of a ten seconds... I would guess he was over 13 pounds. These fish pull like I have never felt... I needed all of my 7 wt, and had trouble keeping my rod tip up as they pulled down..I have landed these brutes on conventional tackle, but its a new ball game with a fly rod. in fact, everything about this trip was a learnign experience. We used a guy named Ross as our guide. Although he is a bit demanding and overbearing.. he is also an amazing guide. He knows the river so well. He would tell me to move my indicator 6 inches over... nd he would say watch out up here there is a piece of moss sticking out... or watch out, there is a stick under the water here. he knew where to find the fish, and how to get em.
I was 0/4 on hook ups to landed, before I actually figured out what I was doing. Hooking and landing steelhead is different from hooking and landing 20-25" regular trout. as soon as you see the nibble... its STRIP! STRIP! STRIP! KEEP STRIPPING! its the only way to really get that hook in good enough to keep em on..once on, its still about a 50% chance of getting em in.
We left Bakersfield around 7am, with the wind at our backs. The drive up seemed to go by so fast. Before we knew it we were looking at the Mountain Grill! Although on the way up, we came to the conclsion that life is a series of fleeting moments, and the trick to life is to recognize those brief, fleeting moments that make it all worth it.... once you are able to recognize how fleeting everything is, the ability to enjoy them grows exponentionally... ok... I know I know... pictures.
b
I will leave the narrative to Chris.

Did I mention the weather was perfect... just as I had remembered from my youth.
Got adipose?
HAY!! thats not a steelhead... just a sea run brown - Chris had two of them. I lost one that was huge...
ok.. thats better
Where are all the people? heheheheh.... we had a few miles all to ourselves.
Do you see that look in my eyes... yep... thats the moment the river actually infected my sole.
One of the highlights for me was bringing my dog along!
Also, found the worlds best pizza. Owned and operated by a young couple who moved to this tiny town from San Francisco. He used to be a chef at a 5 star hotel. Well.... the Pizza was the best I have ever had. Must have the greek pizza.. ITS AMAZING...oh and I guess the desert isnt bad either.
Randy... this is for you. A four layered brownie.. brownie, icecream, brownie, whip cream... garnished with strawberries and fudge sauce.
After some nice micro-brews... it was time at the vise. THis fly was kinda a creation of sorts. it can come in variations. Change the wing case and the color of the copper body... I think its the only fly I could ever need.
And last but not least.. the Livin the Dream shot... ChrisC, August baby... August.

Bill, Chris,
Oh, that's so unfair.
What a great trip. Just being on the water must of been satisfying enough and to catch a few of the river's residents (or are they only short time guests) must of been special. Thanks for sharing and looks like you did it right.
