Clodhopper: This is one easy fly to tie:  I use a bit of glue at almost every step while tying this fly. When I get to the part of adding the legs I do this after the Deer hair, not before. It makes cleaning the Dear hair away from the head much easier since I’m not worrying about cutting the legs and I don’t have to worry about dealing with the legs while applying the Dear hair.

Place hook in vice
Thread heavy from eye to tail and back to eye.
Glue length of threaded hook
Trim ‘tail’ of foam to shape
Place foam so trimmed tail trails over bend of hook and
enough foam at the head is left to fold over the Deer hair wing.
Wrap thread over foam from eye to tail making segmentation.
Dub back to eye with yellow or olive
Stack Deer hair and add at eye making heavy wrap
Trim blunt end of Deer hair back to threading leaving enough so it doesn’t pull out.
Spot of glue on thread and blunt ends
Apply legs cutting the front legs a little shorter.
Fold excess head foam over Deer hair and bind heavily with thread, cutting excess across
Whip finish and glue.

Bummer. I just noticed the revised due date (mid Sept) and I might have a big problem meeting that deadline. I was under the assumption that I had to the end of Sept and that fit well with my schedule since I don't have time to start tying until I return home on Sept 21st. My plan was to tie like a mad-man the week of Sept 21-27 and get them in the mail on Monday, Sept 28th. This doesn't work with the new, Sept 17th, deadline. You'll have to proceed without me or wait for me. Sorry about that.

We can amend the date to Sept 28th, I've no problem with that, Richard. I did indicate the end of Sept with the announcement and trimmed it by a week, once we got started (hoping no one noticed...) Looking forward to seeing your furled hoppers. I'll be expedient in getting these flies back to all of you. I haven't heard from Wildman as to what he wants to tie and he's another tyer with big time commitments due to the fires. He could probably use the additional week, too.

Thanks, Steve. If by some miracle I find some tying time in the evening mid-week next week, I'll try and finish them up. If not, I'll certainly get them tied up by the 28th.

I got Ariel's Clodhopper pattern in the mail yesterday. I love the simplicity of the tie and the clean look of them. They look like they can be chewed on many times without falling apart. I teach a fly tying class once a month here in Ojai and we tied up Peter Frailey's EZ Hopper. It's similar to the Clodhopper in simplicity and the use of a foam body with deer hair wing. Check it out:

I 've got my hoppers all tied.  I ended up changing patterns.  The new fly is Mikey Weir's Hoppicator.  This turned out to be a moderately easy fly to tie.  I couldn't find any recipes for this fly so I had to do the best I could looking at few images I found online.  The most difficult part of tying this foam fly was cutting out the wings.  Until somebody markets a wing cutter this is a trace and cut operation.  Check out Mikey's video on youtube to see how he suggests fishing this fly:

I received two packages today. One from Bill (aka bbruce), Mikey Weir's Hoppicator, and one from Jeff (aka Phelps Bros.), Cherry Bomber Hopper.  I took pics of both patterns and it was obvious that I would have to take a top and bottom view to get a representative pic. First pics are the Hoppicator:

Note the mono loops attached to the shank. This is a great "guide trick". Quick and Easy to attach the dropper and attach the hopper to the tippet. Also note that the body is 1 piece of foam where it is attached to the shank and segmented along the shank, then folded over the top for a wingcase and folded once again at the eye for a head. Another "guide trick", keep those patterns simple, with as few pieces as possible.

The second set of pics is the Cherry Bomber Hopper:

This is really a beautiful pattern. The two-tone foam works well with the brown thread creating a segmented body. I really like the flash as an underwing. From below, it creates the appearance of movement to the fly. The knotted rubberlegs provides a realistic touch to the pattern as well.
Well done, guys!

I received another set of flies from IBRB , Chaos Hoppers. Note the bullet-head construction of the head by piercing the foam through the hook. Knotting the square yellow rubberlegs gives it another "hopper-look". IBRB tied his set in a size 12. This pattern really works for the smaller hook sizes.

Boy, looks like I missed out on a great swap here.  You folks are tying some fantastic hoppers.  I'll take a dozen of the Cherry Bomb Hopper.  Let's go with a size 10 long shank, thanks  Smiley.  The high vis pink was the big selling point Wink.

The tiers keep getting better and better.  Congrads.

Ashtree sent me his Charlie Boy Hoppers. This hopper also has a bullet head construction. The tan foam is folded back over the body and cemented to keep the foam tight to each other. Thread wraps give the segmentation and coastal deer hair is attached just behind the head for a wing.

Nice job, Ashtree!

I heard from Wildman that he is going to tie up Jay "Fishy" Fullum's Hopper pattern. This will give us a nice assortment of hoppers.

I'm checking in to let you know I'm back from vacation and on way to finishing up my hoppers. I've got two done that I'd be proud of sending off and should finish the others up by Friday (or Saturday at the latest). I'll get them in the mail this weekend or Monday at the very latest.

Steve and fellow tyers, thank you for another swap. This is the third swap in the last couple years where I have tied not only a new pattern for me, but also a new style. Thank you for being my guinea pigs.
The first thing I noticed upon attempting my initial fly is the true artistry of Dave Whitlock.
I had difficulty preparing and knotting the hackle legs(maybe someone has a tip or two for me?) to my expectations so I looked for an alternative. I tried rubber, but wanted something different, then tried some super hair with a mix of brown and chartreuse strands, finally settling on knotted goose biots.
I substituted crystal flash for the underwing and tail as well as adding a foam overbody for floatation and animation.
The biggest problem I had was with proportions(wing length/width, head length etc.) which is common for me on a new tie. The flies sent vary from good to o.k.(I hope nobody is dissapointed) with the first five to eight tries being complete reties.
 Flies are going out today.

Peace, Rob
