2009 rod swap preliminaries
Sep 22nd, 2008, 9:44am

I KNOW ITS WAY EARLY BUT, DEAL WITH IT!!!!!!

Alright I have been ask by several people about preliminary guidelines for next year's swap.  So here are the initial parameters:

5 weight or less
9' or less Any length per midger's request.  He has a sweet rod in mind Wink
No budget, since you guys don't follow it anyway Wink.
Include a case.  Don't care if it is PVC or off the hook like Midger's  Shocked.

FYI:  Right now I am planning on having a contest to see who's rod is the club favorite.   Don't worry, I am just raising the bar on building the best we can.  Doesn't have to be the most expensive rod out there.  In fact I am going to tape over the blank information prior to the vote.  I'll either have the builders vote or open the voting to the club.  I'll have a prize for the chosen builder.  Hopefully we can get at least twice the number of builders.

Contest Guidelines:
Finish. No drips, runs, or errors
Wraps. Packed with no gaps or tag ends sticking out
Seat and handle construction. Ex. Is epoxy all over the place
Guides aligned
Overall creativity.  Does it looks good?  Are extras tastefully done?  Ect....

Remember we won't vote on the most expensive but, the best attention to detail.  Start planning and building now.  Don't wait until the last minute  Wink

If I missed something or you have any ideas, let me know.  I know this swap is a year off but, you ask.  Now you don't have a excuses for not finishing a rod on time.

Pete,
I like it with the exception of the length.  Sent you a PM.  I'm currently working on a 10 foot 5 weight, I made one for healing waters, and I used a 3 weight 10 footer this summer on larger rivers (including the Kern).  I like longer rods as you can tell.

Other than that, nothing I can add.

A rod that I have already built in my head is a 9'6 or 10 foot 4wt.

The added length would be great for czech nymphing......

For those of us who are trying to learn/master the techinque the longer rod might be a good investment.

I often find myself with my arm fully extended trying to get a few extra inches on my 9 footer...

by next year - hopefully I can improve my building skills to meet your requirements... Grin

Bill, I too like the idea of a longer rod for nymph fishing, Czech or otherwise. I have been looking at rod blanks and have kind of narrowed it down to St. Croix SCIV blank. I found the factory rod kit for, I think, $240. Really want to do that. I have also been eyeing a TFO TiCR 9'0" 4 wt for the same type of fishing. Maybe I'll do both.

Shoot xbill_y there was nothing wrong with your build.  So the finish threw you a curve, it happens to the best of builders.  Just from seeing your attention to detail and use of colors I can see you walking off with the people's choice award.

Now you guys have me thinking about a longer rod.  Might have to scrap my first rod idea undecided.  One thing is for certain (I think) my swap rod will have an Agate stripping guide Roll Eyes.  Gotta love Agate.

One thing I would like to see is more pictures as the builds progress.  Seeing pictures is a great way to learn other folk techniques and tips.  i.e. Stanberry and Chiaki's feather inlays.

Rob,
Remember it isn't about cost, its about attention to details.  You know what I'm talking about.  You got any cheap ok fly reels at Big 5?  I would like to get one for Katlin's rod if Scott can't find one on e-bay.

Chiaki can you pin this to the top so we always know where it is at?

I would also like to see if we can get an award for people building less than a year. many of us will be in that class. So why not. I will assist with a reward for that pete.

Hey, gents... and ladies,

I saw how you all tried to "up the bar" on your rod builds at the Rendezvous... and was very impressed with your work. Can I join? to help the club at least?

I made a 4'-9", 4 wt. for my best friend a few years back... one piece. It turns out it is an excellent little rod for small creeks and streams. i will offer to build a similar rod for your swap, and let you decide how best to use it. I don't expect anything in return... sorry, I really don't want a plastic rod, no offense, really! I'm hooked on 'boo.

If it works as an auction item... or similar, that will be fine with me. Does that sound like a plan?

P.S. - My other club... Deep Creek wants me to donate a rod, too, but they're wanting it in December. Ain't gonna happen. At least with you folks, I'll have time to build it.  Cheesy

Let me see  undecided, does that some like a plan?  How can I answer that question without sounding rude  Huh? One word: DUH!!!!!!!!!!  Is Duh a word?  Off course you can build a Boo.  If you don't want to play in the swap due to all that plastic stuff I completely understand  Grin.  But, a St. Clair built rod might would be a big $$$$ maker in the raffle.  I am going to start saving right now.  Last Rendezvous your reel scooped in a ton of tickets  (friggin, darn Eric Angry, beat me out of the reel).

I'm a new builder, and am going to attempt to build my first rod.  Grin  If it turns out alright, then I might want to do one for the swap.  What a kick ass event - this is really exciting motivation for me to do a really good job on my first.  Once I'm done, I'll get some of the mentors to look at it  Roll Eyes and maybe with their evaluation and advice I can set out to build my second - and just maybe I can meet the requirements for the swap with a Trout Thumb series I.  One thing is for sure, I look forward to trying.

May the Schwartz be with you all  Grin  Grin. I'm going to San Dimas today.
