Kern River Fly Swap
Feb 14th, 2008, 9:41am

THIS SWAP IS CLOSED

The rules for this swap are basically very simple.  The tier must tie a fly that he/she has caught TROUT on while fishing either the upper or lower Kern River.  ANY FLY you choose (that has caught trout) dry, nymph, emerger, wet, you choose.  Each tier will tie 10 flies (10 flies of whatever pattern you chose) and get them to me by April 1st.  When sending your flies please enclose a self address stamped envelope that can be used to mail your flies back to you.  As always, please add a toe tag to your flies and send them in a crush proof container of some sort.  Below are the names of participants and flies they will be tying:

Converted                           ROBO PT Nymph
NervousWater                     parachute hare's ear
Ibrb                                     TBD
fishinXJ                                Kern River Emerger
Phelps Bros                         rubber-legged copper john
fflutterffly                             The Fox Tail Squirrel Nymph.
Eric2                                    Pheasant Tail Nymph
Wiredog                              double bead pheasant tail nymph
haramic                               parachute Royal Wulff
Troutinator                          TBD

If you haven't chosen a pattern yet, please decide and let me know so I can update the info.  Also, when you're ready to mail your flies I'll PM you my address.  LET THE TYING BEGIN!!!!!!

Put me down for the double bead pheasant tail nymph.  Worked well for me in the faster water on the Kern last year.

That was the first one that came to my mind, but I had a feeling you wanted to do it!  I tried a few, can't wait to compare them to yours.

You say, "Any fly that has caught trout on the Kern?"  Let's see, I've only caught a handful on the Kern, using only a couple of differnt flies, the Royal Wulff and Kern candy.  Is the Kern candy too easy, or should I pick something else? undecided

The Kern Candy would be fine.  BTW, I've fished with guys who have used Kern Candy and caught fish right in front of me while I was also using it and never even got a bite.  I switched to a ROBO PT and was into fish.  I have NEVER caught a fish on Kern Candy and I've tried it up and down the river.  But others swear by it.   I don't know if it's my presentation, retrieve or what!!!!  I know it works, I've seen it, but it just doesn't work for me.  Go figure.  cry cry cry

I've caught quite a few on the Kern Candy.  In fact the day before last years tournament I caught my personal best on a fly rod with one.  Sure wish I could have caught him the next day.  As if it would have made a difference.

Then please put me down for Kern Candy.  W/C taught me how to tie them and as a new fly tyer, I'd like to see some quality flies going to my fellow tyers.  With my "handy-dandy" fly tying DVDs and bible, I'm capable of tying more difficult flies, but not always pretty.

PS I couldn't get photobucket to transfer properly so I had to use direct links for the pictures.  Their website resizes them but for some reason they transfer to this site as the original size. If anybody know what is wrong please PM me. thanks
