Note from Joel
I've been in touch with Bill and he gave me the following list for those who want to send something to the school. Also, in the interest of protecting Bill and not over loading him with correspondence, I am consolidating the donations. I will update the list of sponsors as things come in. Items can be sent to:
BSFF
C/O Joel Stewart
26 Hoppin Road
Newport RI 02840
I am not trying to be forward and solicit donations, but so many of you have wanted to contribute and this seems to be the best way to do it. So here is the list:
Fly line cleaner
tippet material (2x to 5x)
tapered leaders (7.5ft to 9ft 2x-5x)
fly lines 3 or 4 5wt and 6wt and 3 or 4 7wt and 8 wt
reels - 3 or 4 5-6wt and 3 or 4 7-8wt
rods 3 or 4 7 and 8 wt
FLIES
Here are some specific patterns that work:
Wooly Bugger sizes 6, 8, 10 black, brown and olive (olive and black are best)
Elk hair caddis 12, 14, 16
Hare's Ear (bead head) 10, 12, 14
Baghdad Pheasant Butt
Iraqi Minnow
(This is my bead chain pattern that is a killer for asp) In general the following types of flies are good: carp flies (carpers know) 6, 8, 10
Damsel flies 6, 8, 10
Shrimp flies 8, 10, 12
minnow patterns, 6, 8, 10, 12
The guys are beginners, and so lots of flies are lost! Also, there are some vicious rogue palm trees that eat flies like crazy, I sure lost my share to them!
Thank you all for everything!
Underway! Joel
That is the latest on the Baghdad School of Fly Fishing.
Who is ready to donate or tie some flies?

This is an awesome thing to do. I'm happy to tie up some flies for our guys in Iraq. I've been wanting to do something, but really didn't know what to do. You've made it easy for me to do my little bit. Thanks, Raider

Ariel,
I have a black Poodle and I frequently use her brushed hair collectings for dubbing...makes some great black ant patterns that I call Emma Ants....works for me

Eastern, I certainly can understand the poodle thing since they don't have fur, but a type of hair that is supposed to be hollow. Is this true?
About flies. There must be a reasonable way to tell an emerger from a dry, from a stimulator.
I read...but...then someone shows me something and I get all twisted around.

Ariel. Yes poodle hair is hollow and I only use the very fine hair that is captured on the brush after brushing her. It is very fine and is very similar to dubbing and floats like it was saturated with flotant, consequently I only use it for dry flies.
As far as an emerger goes the artificial emerger is fairly easy to recognise as it is neither a dry fly or a nymph but something in between. A good example is the Kern Emerger as the foam wing case is designed so the fly will work just below the surface another is the emergent sparkle pupa fly designed by Gary LaFontaine. By stimulator/attractor flies I think you mean searching flies of which two come to mind quickly. The first is the Adams and second the royal wolf. Neither which represent any one species of insect but in fact emulate several types of insect and are readily taken by fish before an actual hatch starts. Many fly anglers (myself included) will use these flies to determine whether a fish will rise to a fly and then experiment with size until a fish takes and sometimes those flies are the only thing a fish will take, that's why they are so popular and should be in your fly box.
Hope this helps.

This is really cool of you to post. I'm one who has responded but didn't know how or what to respond with.
I've got:
1) Orvis 8wt rod (recently repaired hardly used)
2) A large flybox of Wooly Buggers and Leaches.
3) Lots of 5x tapered leader.
4) Plenty of Armor All wipes which are great line cleaners.
Do I send them to Joel Stewart or what?

And the place to send your stuff is as follows.
BSFF

I sent out around 30 flies the other day.
I think this is a great way for them to relax after a hard days work.
Thanks for sending some more stuff to these fine ladies and gentlemen.

Does anyone know if flies can legally be sent "loose" in an envelope? I was thinking of sticking them into a piece of foam and sending them that way, but I'm wondering if the postal service would have a kitten about it any way I sent them that wasn't boxed.

Wade, when I order them on line they come in a plastic bag inside a padded envelope.

Go buy a tin of Altoids gum or breath mints and send them in that inside a padded enveloper.
Works good.
