How Bloody Mad are You?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Jun 2nd, 2006, 7:16pm

I'm apologizing before I get going on this Post... But I am Ragingly Pissed Off... Angry ( I will attempt a Civil Tongue)

After reading Both PAPASEQUOIA & WATCHINTHEWATER's Posts on the Same creek above The KERN and the Disgusting Pictures of the Blatant Trash Dumping that Took place there over the Memorial Day Weekend... I can't set still for it ANYMORE....

The Problem with the Kern River Area is that it's about the Last Place in the Sierra Nevada that allows Camping and Picnicing in Undeveloped sites... any road one can drive down and Park, it's acceptable to Camp or Picnic there... With no Fees charged to stay or use the area, the SCUM just dump all their Trash there and forget it... (They probably know nothing is gonna happen to them, cause it's an out of the Way place... No Ranger or Law Enforcement is seen about the area)

There's been talk for years about doing away with the "Camp anywhere you want" that is rampant along the Kern...  But that's the Problem, It's Just TALK... I've not heard much of forward action to End this Abusive practice in the Area...
I Love The Kern Canyon and have enjoyed going there since the Mid 1970s... But this "Trash Dumping Abuse" has stained what can be an Otherwise Beautiful and Clean Place...

I Clean Up, Like EVERYONE on this Board Does... but it's Not working that well.. These Disgusting Pictures Prove it....

It's Bloody Time we all join together, sign a Petition, Included Large Copies of All these Photos Papa & Watchin took of this Criminal Abuse and get after the Sequoia National Forest to Stop All Camping and Day use in Undeveloped Areas...

I don't mind paying a Fee to park at a Designated Location, to Camp a few days at a Developed Campsite... If I know that these Blatant Violators will be Ticketed and/or Arrested for not following the Rules...

Do you all know that Kern Canyon is often referred to as "The Armpit of the Sierra" because the Forest service still allows camping and day use just about anywhere?? This coming from a Ranger in Inyo National Forest and another  Ranger in the Stanislaus National Forest??

I Know that the Southern Sierra Flyfishers, Guy, Rock-L, Dave and the others at the Troutfitters are doing what they can...(I salute and Offer My Support to all of them)
But if we could set up an Online Petition and get folks off other Boards to sign it(and Believe Me, we'd Get alot of Signatures...)  Or even have someone, who's better at wording it, Make a Down-loadable form letter we can all print up, sign and Mail in...we can force more prominent, Major Changes alot Sooner.....

I want to see the end of these Disgusting Abuses and never have to hear the Kern Canyon referred to as "The Armpit of the Sierra"...

That's my "Rant".....

HOW BLOODY MAD ARE ALL OF YOU?!!!?

Dean - those pictures of trash brought back ugly memories of past encounters with massive trash dumps in and around the southern Sierras. What is it about holiday weekends that attracts people who like to dump trash around their campsites and drive off to head back home?

Count me in on any effort to get the free dispersed camping restricted or eliminated in the Sequoia National Forest. Heck, that's my backyard folks are dumping trash in! Who do we talk to and how do we talk to them to get this changed?

Luckily there are organizations like the FFF who have an Adopt-A-Stream program and the Friends of the Sequoia's who have a Save-A-Trail program.  BUT.......

You should come up sometime in September when we have our Pride Day and check out the 15 to 20 BIG refuse company dumpsters that are full....and it's 99% from the highway...

On behalf of the SSFFC and the Friends of the Hatchery, please let me know what we can do to help the cause.

I've been bloody mad about it for years.  Pigs, pure and simple.  Same as taggers (and I've said on here what ought to be done with them).  I've called the KRV my main time off destination for over 30 years, and my parents used to have a place up Evans Rd. out of Wofford Heights, so I've spent a whole lot of time up there.  That said, I REFUSE (pun intended) to come up on holiday weekends, and rarely go up during the summer at all.  30 years ago it wasn't like this.  It seems the trashers stayed below the dam back in the day.  Obviously it's not like that any more.

I hadn't been up on a holiday in many years until about 3 years ago when David went on a backpack trip with his troop over Cottonwood Pass on 4th of July weekend.  Me and a buddy and David came up on Friday night, stayed at Rivernook, ate breakfast at the airport, then took him over Walker Pass to meet the rest of his group at Pearsonville.  After we dropped him off we headed up Nine Mile Canyon and just hung out for a while in Kennedy Meadows.  I don't remember us catching anything, but that isn't important.  We drove over Sherman Pass and down the hill.  When we got to the canyon road, it was solid tarps and tents all the way from Johnsondale Bridge to Riverkern.  You couldn't see a bare spot of ground from the highway to the river if you searched with a magnifying glass. Frankly, it was the most disgusting thing I've ever seen in my life.  I shudder to think of what it looked like when these "nature lovers" left.

I tend to scream a lot, but don't really do anything.  Dean, you have inspired me to do something.  I've had enough of these pigs of society.  Whether it's trashing everything in sight, graffitti, or just general disregard for anybody else, it's time to do something.

I have a question for the feds (whether it's USFS, our esteemed Senators, whoever).  Isn't the Kern River (north and south Fork) above Lake Isabella a designated "Wild and Scenic River"?  What part of tarp city and the trash dump fit into the "Wild and Scenic" part?

I think part of the noise making has to be letter writing campaigns to our Senatorial delegation, House members, etc., in addition to the USFS hierarchy.

Sen. Boxer claims to be so environmentally-conscious (she's always trying to create additional "wilderness" areas whether they really are or not).  You would think she would be the loudest screamer about this issue.  It's time to see where she really stands on matters like this.

Perhaps this is a foolish idea, but maybe not. I would be willing to drive around a bit on the days many are leaving the area and take pictures of anyh one leaving trash along the road or by a campsite. It might be possible to get a shot including a vehicle or a license plate. Maybe this is silly and improbable, maybe not. Coujld anything be done with pictures?

RANDY,

Pictures can do ALOT to get the point across to the Powers that be, about the Abuse that is being Perpetrated along the Kern River Canyon...(The Same way a series of Pictures can change alot of Folks views about Wars and such...)

Pictures are Extremely Powerful at getting the point across... "A picture is worth a thousand Words" adage...

By all means do the "Recon Missions" when it's convenient... Don't let it distract and take away from Your Fishing & enjoyment of the Outdoors... Just when you come across such violations... (Also Document the Pictures : Date, location, etc... that will give even more power to the Photos..).

However Do Not Endanger your Well being and person by confronting these Violators face to face.. Be Stealthy and non confrontational when acquiring the License plates, auto descriptions, etc.... You getting beat up and seriously injured trying to acquire the Pictures and Information isn't worth it... Wink

EVERYONE,

I'm beginning work on a Form letter that hopefully someone will be able to upload onto a site (This Site, hopefully) so that Folks can download a copy and print it, then Mail it to the Proper Folks at the Sequoia National Forest...

Plus I'm gonna Set up an Online Petition that we'll post the Link to as well...

It will offer Two options for Concerned Folks to support the Project... It would be Best if Everyone did BOTH OPTIONS.....

I'll post the progress...

If any of you ,have suggestions, Email me Directly... I can use all the Assistance I can get with this....

TOGETHER, WE'LL GET THIS CHANGED FOR THE BETTER Grin Grin

I am all for some control of the undeveloped areas that we have to use.  But a word of warning.  If you get the government involved, they have only one way to deal with problems like this.  They deal with it globally and close it to everyone knowing that they will be closing it to the good people of this board and others that enjoy but not abuse the area.  And when that happens 'we' don't go up there anymore, but 'they' still will and will trash it just the same.

Might be better to deal with it as a crime, help the authorities deal with it and just clean up our playgrounds even tho we aren't the piggies.

Still, it pisses me off something awful too.

Any thoughts?

How about a guard shack at the beginning of the road. They could find out who is there. You have to contact these scums before they do anything. Sometimes simple education is all it takes. That would at least cut it down. But sometimes the only thing that would work is Nav's 24 inch club.
Numbered and assigned campsites.
Severe warning signs.
Reserved camping.
Maybe Curt the Ranger who patrols the camps up there can give us some suggestions as well.
I am planning on going up to the arm pit on the 22nd and it will look better than when I found it you can be sure of that!
Dean, If you need help or research or what ever for this project please let me know. I will help the spearhead.
If I knew this problem existed with such profound impact when I talked with Arnold a couple of months ago I would have brought it to his attention. darn!

The " Timing  " is always good Ariel, for people like you and all the great people on this forum who always are looking to make the Fly Fishing community and the places we fish and visit and care about better for everyone, there is no bad timing when it comes to things like this

thnx Ariel

I agree with you and my thoughts are.......
Anything you start will effect not only the people on this board but thousands of Kernville residents and visitors.  The residents of Kernville and surrounding areas ARE sick and tired of cleaning up after the piggies, as you put it, but.....PLEASE carefully think through what it is that you are going to request.  It will effect our lives more than it will effect yours.....we live on the tourist industry and they aren't ALL guilty!

Has anyone bothered to find out how many personnel we have here and how many miles they are required to cover?  Has anyone checked into the state's budget and where the money is supposed to come from to have the guard shacks or additional personnel that will be required?  And has anyone checked into any one of the several volunteer programs we have up here to clean up after the piggies?  Angry is one thing but please don't go off half cocked over an issue without the research and knowledge necessary to form an educated
opinion.

Just my 2 pennies......

Im in general agreement with all of you about the trash situation. However you will notice that it is not particularly good in the approved areas unless someone comes in behind the others. I just came back from Piru creek and I couldn't have carried out all the litter with 10 bags.
Sometimes I wish to camp in areas that are not designated. No crowds, no boombox till 3am, no drunks wandering all over. If you seek to close off the Southern Sierra to them you do it to me also. I follow the law they don't. They'll do the same to your approved areas.
Now your back to enforcement. The States attitude about enforcement wiil be to increase fees. pretty soon you'll be spending $65.00 a night to stay at Limestone.
The answer I think is to put pressure on the agencies to enforce the existing laws. Not likely but maybe the answer is more trash receptacles even if they have to be picked up by volunteers such as ourselves.
