Hi Dean
A Kern Emerger is basically a Hares Ear pattern with a yellow foam wing casing to keep it right below the surface.

Hey Guy
Most of the time I fish these right on the bottom, using lots of weight. However, you mentioned fishing them right below the surface. Do you weight them, or fish them as a true "emerger" right under the surface film?

GUY,
And here I was thinking it was going to be something Unique
.... Interesting that you would do that...a small group I was "IN With" back in the late '80s we tyed P.T. Nymphs with White Foam wing cases...resulting in the same thing you get with the Hare's Ear... I haven't tyed any of the "Emerger P.T.s" in years... maybe I should tye up afew & tuck them away in my Nymph Box.. Thanks for the "enlightenment"...
JEREMY,
I'd guess Guy was fishing these "Hare's Ear Emerger" right in the surface film, if not just under it. I, too, love the Hares Ear nymph bombing across the Bottom of a River or Stream.. Lately, however, I have been leaning more & More towards a Soft Hackle Hares Ear for overall use. True I still use Beadhead Hares Ears to ply the depths... but I find the Soft Hackle Version is producing more & more for me... Honestly as long as it is some form of the Hares Ear..I'll fish it faithfully.....

Dean and Jeremy
I fish the Kern Emerger a few different ways.
Technique #1- I fish the fly right under the surface drifting behind a dry.
Technique #2- I swing it behind a streamer or bugger, I through a couple of mends down stream to get the flies down then start stripping as the flies start to swing. This causes the Kern Emerger to rise in the current and this is where most of the strikes occur.
Technique#3 - I bounce 2 flies off the bottom under a indicator, usually a big stone 8-10 followed by a Kern Emerger 12-14 .This technique produces the most fish and its my favorite.
Very simple fly that seems to produce alot of fish on the Kern and Lake Isabella.
Jeremy-Thanks for developing the new fly "Petersons Kerndicator" we think its awesome.Your such a talented fly tier and teacher and were proud to have them at the
shop. With so many fish coming up and grabbing indicators these days I think it will be a hit.
Talk to you guys soon

Thank you for the compliments, Guy. I just have one request. If anyone fishes with the indicators and has any problems at all, no matter what they are, please write me so I can address them. The only way a fly can evolve and become better is with input from those who fish it.
I hope everyone enjoys the creation and I look forward to hearing from those who use it.
My email address is dedevelopment@aol.com
Thanks,
Jeremy

I don't tie my own fly's and I sure don't know anything about fly tieing edicate(heck I'm not even sure how to spell edicate). But I think if you would like to try tying your own Kern Emerger you should drop by Troutfitters and pick a couple up. If you live out of the area and don't fish the Kern thats something different. Still I'll bet that if you went to the the Troutfitters home site they could mail order some. Guy and the others at the shop have always been very helpful and willing to share information and I always stop by when I'm in the area.

I utilized your 'Kerndicator' a few times late last year before the the water turned cold and the fish went deep.
Never had a strike, did have two fish (maybe 14")come up and take look.
I was using red and found it a little difficult to see, perhaps a little white in pattern would help .

Thanks for the suggestion. I tied the Kerndicator in red, white, red/white, and green. However, they seemed to disappear as quickly as I tied them. I plan to stop and see Guy again in the next week and discuss tying more indicators for him.
Your creative criticism is always welcome.

Hmm, what kind of a person posting as "know it all" would dig out a post about the kern emerger from 2004? I hope it's not that guy who follows the stocking truck around...
